Welcome to Year 1
Staff: Our Year 1 teachers are Miss Kirkham and Miss Playford.
Mrs Aspin (HLTA), will cover Miss Playford’s class on a Thursday and Miss Kirkham’s class on a Wednesday morning. Helping to assist in our classrooms will be Mrs Denton.
PPA: Our PPA is on a Monday afternoon. During this time children will be taught by Mrs Little who delivers Computing and Mrs Marshall who will deliver Science.
P.E: Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday.
On Wednesday, a SUFC coach delivers the PE session. Please ensure that PE kits are brought in on Monday so the children are properly prepared for both lessons. At times, we may go outside for PE, a warm jacket or jumper may be beneficial during the colder temperatures. Please ensure that all PE kit is labelled clearly with your child's name. Although we try to make sure kit goes home with the right child, this is sometimes a struggle and misplaced kit can be located in the Y1 shared area.
At Woodhouse West we believe that learning at home is a key aspect of children’s development. It helps children improve and consolidate key skills, and provides a valuable opportunity for children to share with their parents/carers learning they have been doing at school.
Home learning menus are given out at the start of every half term highlighting activities and projects the children can complete based on their current topic. Children will be encouraged to complete homework from the 'homework menu' from their class teacher.
Children will have the opportunity to share their learning with the rest of KS1 in our Learner of the Week assembly on a Tuesday. All projects will be displayed in the Y1 cloakroom or shared area on completion.
Please do share photographs of your children carrying out the tasks by e-mailing them to firstname.lastname@example.org
Medication: Please let the school and your child's class teacher know if your child has any condition requiring medication, including allergies or asthma. If your child needs to be on a course of medication then please complete the relevant form with the school office.
Uniform: Please make sure that all school uniform and PE kits are clearly labelled.
Topic -Autumn 1 - Friend or Foe?
Starting off the year, we will be looking at a range of traditional tales, exploring the characters and retelling stories. Whilst reading our stories, we will be identify rhyming words and repeated phrases. We will also be focussing on counting reliably forwards and backwards, forming our numbers, and recognising and naming 2D shapes. As artists we will be concentrating on mixing colours, using various brushes and painting. We will use a range of materials to construct houses and test their suitability. As geographers we will be looking at maps and then devising our own, using a key. During RE lessons, we will be focusing on a range of celebrations and festivals. We will discuss why and how Christians celebrate Harvest festival and at the end of the half-term we will host a fairy tale feast of our own.
