Welcome to Year 5
Staff: The class teachers this year are Miss Parker and Miss Peterson and the teaching assistants are Mrs Riley (who is in Miss Parker’s class) and Mrs Little (who is in Miss Peterson’s class).
PPA: Our PPA is on a Thursday afternoon and the children will either be taught science by Mrs Marshall or computing with Mrs Little. Our NQT time is on a Friday afternoon and the children will be taught topic by Mrs Little and Mrs Flint.
PE: Our PE days are on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Please ensure that PE kits, including trainers, are brought in every Monday so the children are prepared for both lessons. Children need to make sure that long hair is tied up and jewellery be removed before every PE lesson. Because PE will be taught outside this half term, a warm jacket or jumper may be beneficial as we get to the colder months. Please make sure that all PE kit is labelled with your child’s name.
At Woodhouse West we believe that learning at home is a key aspect of children’s development. It helps children improve and consolidate key skills, and provides a valuable opportunity for children to share with their parents/carers learning they have been doing at school.
New spellings will be sent home on a Friday and children will be tested on these the following Friday.
Each half term, children will be encouraged to complete homework from a 'homework menu' from their class teacher. This will be a range of activities relating to their current topic that parents can complete with their children. Please do share photographs of your children carrying out the tasks by e-mailing them to email@example.com.
Uniform: Please make sure that all school uniform and PE kits are clearly labelled.
Medication: Please let the school and your child's class teacher know if your child has any condition requiring medication, including allergies or asthma. If your child needs to be on a course of medication then please complete the relevant form with the school office.
Topic- Autumn 1: Anglo Saxons- the ruin of Great Britain?
We will be travelling back in time to explore life as an Anglo Saxon soldier, farmer and child. Returning from an immersive trip at Weston Park Museum, the children will first explore why the Anglo Saxons came to Britain and then the tensions between the kingdoms. We will also be analysing the reliability of the Bayeux Tapestry in giving us information about the Battle of Hastings, and recreating the tapestry using sewing techniques. We have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, such as making bread using an Anglo Saxon recipe which they will then eat with an Anglo Saxon feast.
The children will explore the topic questions across all areas of the curriculum. For more information on our topic and how this will be covered by the key national curriculum subjects, please refer to our curriculum newsletter.
