Nursery Topic Blurb
Summer 2
How will you travel to the beach?
Our topic this half term is “Oh I do like to be beside the seaside” with a strong focus on the three prime areas of the EYFS curriculum.
Communication and Language
Let’s go on an adventure to the seaside! Imagine the sound of the waves, the feel of the sand between your toes, and the cool breeze on your face. At the beach, we can use our words to describe everything we see, hear, and feel. We can talk about the big, blue sea, the shiny shells, and the funny seagulls flying overhead. Let’s ask questions, share ideas, and learn new words like shore, tide, splash, and driftwood. Talking about the seaside helps us get better at using language to express ourselves and understand others! So, what can you see at the beach? Let’s talk about it together!
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Children will have lots of opportunities to build their personal, social, and emotional skills through seaside-themed role play. As they pretend to be lifeguards, sailors, or ice cream vendors, they’ll learn how to share toys, take turns, and cooperate with friends. They might work together to build a sandcastle or pretend to go on a boat ride, practicing teamwork and problem-solving. During these role play activities, children will also explore expressing their feelings—whether they're excited about a big wave or feeling nervous about a seagull stealing their snack. This encourages them to manage emotions and build confidence as they navigate different situations. Through these fun, shared experiences, children will develop empathy and learn how to support each other, creating strong friendships along the way.
Physical Development
Through seaside-themed activities, children will also develop their physical skills. As they pretend to dig in the sand, build sandcastles, or run along the “beach,” they’ll practice their gross motor skills, like balancing, jumping, and running. Using props like buckets, spades, and toy boats helps strengthen their fine motor skills as they scoop, pour, and build with small objects. These activities promote hand-eye coordination, strength, and agility. Whether they are playing in a “splashing” water game or pretending to collect seashells, they’ll also enhance their coordination and spatial awareness, all while having fun in a playful, active environment

Tiny Crab is a Tidy Crab by Paula Bowles
Tiny Crab is a tidy crab, and a crab who LOVES his beach. So, when he invites a few friends to come and join his favourite place, he knows they will look after it, too . . . won’t they? But what if they don’t? And, worse, what if LOTS of friends arrive then leave rubbish EVERYWHERE, which Tiny Crab is forced to tidy up. Maybe even the smallest voices need to make themselves heard.

Sharing a Shell Paperback by Julia Donaldson

Somebody Swallowed Stanley by Sarah Roberts
Everybody has a taste for Stanley - and the other ocean creatures just keep mistaking him for a delicious treat - but this is no ordinary jellyfish. Most jellyfish have dangly-gangly tentacles, but Stanley has two handles… Other jellyfish have a magical glow, but Stanley has stripes… Because Stanley (spoiler alert) is a plastic bag!
