Summer 1
Nursery Topic Blurb
What will I find on a farm?
Our topic this half term is “Old MacDonald” with a strong focus on the three prime areas of the EYFS curriculum.
Communication and Language
During this topic, children will discover a world full of exciting sights, sounds, and experiences that help develop their language and communication skills. As they explore, they’ll encounter animals like cows, chickens, and sheep, learning new words to describe them and their sounds. Through conversations with adults and peers, children will practice asking questions, expressing ideas, and expanding their vocabulary. By observing the daily activities on the farm, such as feeding animals and collecting eggs, young learners can engage in storytelling, enhancing their understanding of cause and effect. This rich environment encourages children to listen, speak, and share their thoughts, building their confidence and communication abilities in the process.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Children will find plenty of opportunities to develop their personal, emotional, and social skills, through exploring farm-related stories, toys, and roleplay. They will practice empathy as they learn to care for and respect the animals they encounter. They will also experience a sense of responsibility when caring for pretend animals or helping with simple farm-related tasks in the classroom. These activities encourage children to build confidence, learn to work as a team, and practice taking turns. The farm theme provides a fun way for children to express their emotions, build resilience, and form positive relationships with others as they share and collaborate in their play.
Physical Development
In this topic, children will find a variety of activities that help develop their physical skills. Whether they are pretending to feed animals, collect eggs, or help with farm chores, children will engage in movements that strengthen their coordination, balance, and motor skills. Through roleplay, they may mimic actions like lifting, carrying, and sorting, which support their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Large-scale activities, like running, jumping, or pretending to herd animals, help children develop strength, agility, and gross motor skills. The farm theme provides a fun and active way for children to build their physical abilities while exploring the world around them.
